This will be my opinion on the Tokina 80-400 lens. First of all, there is a big gap between the cheap and usable options and the more serious mid range lenses like the Canon 100-400mm and 400mm lens or the Bigma 50-500mm and Sigma 100-300mm. I have owned them all and for now I just needed a lightweight longer lens for my next vacation trip. I had no real expectations given the cheap price and so I was very surprised to learn that the Tokina does a decent job. It is not an L or EX lens obviously, but it comes out sharper at 80mm than my other lenses and holds up at f/8 nearly all the way through to 400mm. It seems the sharpness is a tad backed up at around 380mm. I was able to get very nice results using the tripod mount. Overall, I would recommend this lens if you have a decent tripod.
